When you think of a marathon runner, you picture someone full of energy, discipline, and good health. But for 51-year-old Lee Rawlinson from Essex, UK, life took a heartbreaking turn. A devoted father of two and passionate runner, Lee was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer — all starting from what he thought were small, harmless symptoms.

A Life-Changing Diagnosis
Lee, who works in medical sales, lives with his wife Faye and their two children, Darcey (10) and Marley (7). On Halloween, Lee received news that shook his world: he had pancreatic cancer that had already spread to his liver. Doctors told him he had only months to live.
Instead of giving in to despair, Lee decided to focus on making the most of his remaining time — creating what he calls “magical memories” with his family during what may be his final Christmas. “This will be my last Christmas,” Lee shared. “I’m facing the jaws of death. I’m sailing toward it, and I can’t do anything about it. But my fear isn’t death — it’s leaving my children and my wife behind.”
It All Started With a Small Ache
Lee’s story began in January when he felt a dull ache in his lower abdomen. He dismissed it as stress or just a minor issue. Even when he visited his doctor and was referred to a specialist, the waiting time for further tests was long — 21 weeks. His blood and urine tests came back clear, which led to no urgent action being taken.
By September, however, the pain had become so intense that he could no longer ignore it. “I was taking painkillers every day, but they didn’t help. It felt like someone was slowly pushing a scaffolding pole right through me,” he said. Then, during his son’s football practice, the pain became unbearable and sent him to the emergency room. A CT scan revealed the devastating truth: terminal pancreatic cancer.
A Message Everyone Needs to Hear
Now, Lee is using his story to raise awareness about this deadly disease. His message is clear: never ignore your body’s warning signs, no matter how small they seem.
“I didn’t think much of it when the dull ache started,” he said. “But I wish I had pushed for more tests earlier. Early diagnosis can make all the difference.”
Lee also learned that his grandfather had pancreatic cancer, suggesting a possible genetic link. “The consultant told me that sometimes it’s just your destiny,” Lee added. While he can’t change the past, he hopes his story will inspire others to listen more closely to their bodies and seek help sooner.
“If you feel something’s not right — even if it seems minor — get it checked. Don’t wait. It could save your life.”
Making the Most of the Time Left
Lee is now focused on spending meaningful time with his family. Recently, he surprised his children with a trip to Lapland. “I want to be a part of their lives, even if it’s only through memories,” he said with emotion.

But Lee isn’t just thinking about his own family. He’s also speaking out for the many others who may face similar battles in silence. He’s calling for more research, funding, and awareness about pancreatic cancer. “Survival rates for this cancer haven’t improved much since the 1970s,” he said. “That’s not acceptable. We need change. We need people to pay attention before it’s too late for someone else’s family.”
Final Thoughts
Lee’s courage in the face of a terminal diagnosis is a reminder of how important it is to never overlook what our bodies are telling us. His hope is that his story will not only help others recognize the signs of pancreatic cancer early, but also push for more action and support in fighting this deadly disease.

As Lee continues to live each day with purpose, he leaves us with a powerful message: Listen to your body. Act early. Make memories that matter.
