A Final Message of Hope and Faith

Just a day before his passing, Judge Caprio posted a heartfelt video on Instagram, speaking openly about a recent setback in his cancer treatment. Lying in his hospital bed, he addressed his 3.2 million followers:

“Last year, I asked you to pray for me, and it’s very obvious that you did because I came through a very difficult period,” Caprio shared. “Unfortunately, I’ve had a setback, and I’m back in the hospital now. I’m coming to you again, asking you to remember me in your prayers once more.”

‘America’s Nicest Judge’

Frank Caprio first took his seat on the bench in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1985. Over the next four decades, his reputation for fairness and kindness grew, and he eventually became a national figure thanks to his courtroom reality show, Caught in Providence, which aired from 2018 to 2020. One of his most memorable moments came during a case involving a 96-year-old man named Victor Colella, who had been fined for speeding in a school zone. Colella explained that he was driving his 63-year-old handicapped son, who was battling cancer, to get his blood work done. Without hesitation, Caprio dismissed the case.

“You are a good man,” Caprio told him warmly. “You really are what America is all about. Here you are, in your 90s, and you’re still taking care of your family. That’s just a wonderful thing.”

This moment went viral and cemented Caprio’s place in the hearts of millions. He often repeated one phrase that perfectly summed up his philosophy on justice:

“I don’t wear a badge under my robe. I wear a heart.”

Honoring His Legacy

After nearly 40 years of service, Judge Caprio officially retired in October 2023. To honor his memory, Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee ordered all state agency and government building flags to be lowered to half-staff.

“Judge Caprio was a Rhode Island treasure,” Governor McKee said in a statement. “On a personal level, he was a friend who faced his illness with incredible bravery, and I will miss him dearly. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
